Especially, in Istanbul, the concept of urban transformation has gained momentum parallel to social, political, economic, geographic and cultural transformations of everyday life. These transformations invite a new analysis of architecture and urbanity in view of the heterogeneous urban fabric. Globalization and the changes in the everyday cultural activities affect the new meanings of the 'city' and 'urban life'. The contemporary debate on the subject is marked by impacts of change, transformation and forces of the global market. With this lecture I aim to explain the role of the architect in this kind of relational environment without disregarding his leading nature of artist.Īrchitecture and city have been the subject of various debates globally throughout the course of history. The esthetic work is determined by the “ideology” that underlies the institutional design and transformations of a state or a city. His work is therefore subjected to an approbation that is determined by the historical identity of such organisms and he has to confront his genius with this fact. However, as in modern societies this collective dimension is superseded by institutionalized organizations such as cities and states, the modern architect faces social interests that are endorsed by already institutionalized organisms. a space in which both moral and esthetic canons are collectively examined and approved. In order to understand his role we have hence to deal firstly with a social dimension, which is properly a normative dimension, i.e.

Therefore he works within a social enterprise that is collectively acknowledged and evaluated. He is rather embedded in collective practices that are normally unified and coordinated by unitary and institutionalized organisms like states, cities or international organizations. As we live in societies subjected to rising social control and approbation due to both the huge process of acculturation and the role of the media, the architect is no more one artist on the service of a single sovereign or prince like, for example, in the Renaissance. In this lecture I intend to point out the role and the tasks of the architecture in the modern western societies. Discussion on the profession of architecture develops around the themes of (1) better communication and dialogue, (2) teamwork experiences, and (3) education and practice in a life-long continuum of learning. This is followed by the discussion on the implications of the changing social responsibilities of the architect for architectural education through the themes of (1) the cultivation of values and a liberal education basis, (2) interdisciplinary education, and (3) community involvement.

The paper starts with an attempt to define the profile of today’s architect as it is discussed in professional and academic circles. It underlines that, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, we need a re-appraisal of professional practice and education in architecture in relation to the environmental and social challenges that seem more pressing today. It attempts to redefine the widening social role of the architect in the design and redevelopment of cities. This paper points to the changing demands entailed by urbanization that necessitates enlarging the activity area of architectural profession and education. The importance of the design quality of the built environment is higher in public’s perception than before. Concurrently the problematic results of politically motivated urban policies are confronted with growing public recognition and reaction. The redevelopment of urban districts is more and more discussed in academic and professional circles. These projects have immediate impact on our environments and cause remarkable changes in our daily lives. Today our cities are rapidly changing through the expansion of metropolis and the implementation of numerous big-scale urban redevelopment projects.
